Sculpture - 8th Grade...
These students studied the elements of Value and Form, along with the principle of Emphasis while also solving the problem of how to apply them in a three dimensional work of art. They studied the technique of Japanese origami along with viewing some work created by famous NASA physicist, Robert Lang. Lang has spent a life time studding origami as a hobby, but was inspired to apply the ancient practice of folding paper to other materials that can be used in rockets and automobile airbags. The result of our studies can be seen in the variety of works highlighted below. I am very proud of this group's accomplishments and their work has inspired me with new ideas on how I can continue to grow this project for future classes.
Drawing - 7th Grade
For now, they have been studying the elements of form, value, and space in order to create a pencil rendering from a reference. In past semesters I have created sill life arrangements, from which we started, but decided to also roll out using black and white photographic references of fruit. Students looked at and analyzed works by master artists Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne in order to understand their use of shape and space. To culminate the unit, students learned techniques for how to use artists drawing pencils and other tools, such as smudge sticks and kneaded erasers, in order to complete a still life study. See the amazing results below:
