In an effort to begin building up the art program at East Cary, I am beginning an initiative to procure various studio equipment and educational resources. At this time our first initiative is a class set subscription to Scholastic Art Magazine. Please take a moment to check out our Donor's Choose project called Art and Literacy. As I have begun to work with students at East Cary, I am quickly discovering that they are highly intelligent and very capable doers and thinkers. I am highly impressed with the work they have put into my classes in this first week alone and I feel that it is my responsibility as their teacher to expose them to more than just simply the basics of art and design, but to prepare them for the next level. Literacy is important in all subject areas because it enables us to read and interprate concepts and make connections not only within a particular subject area but across curriculum. I am anxious to see how my students advance their literacy skills by applying them in the study of visual arts.

Devon is a 7th grader who really stepped in up in the last couple of weeks. I caught him diving head first into drawing his still life and doing a great job to capture the range of values as seen in his reference image. As he finished up his work early, I also noticed him assisting other classmates and giving them feedback on their drawings. I am truly amazed at his demonstration of maturity and citizenship towards his peers.
